The speech passes to her whom the list of brothers did not name — and of her is said the chief word of this book: sāṁnidhya.
Sāṁnidhya means “nearness, presence, being-beside”. And it is said: śrīrāma-sāṁnidhya-vaśāt — “by the power of Śrī-Rāma's nearness”.
That is, she creates, holds and withdraws the worlds not by her own authority, but by His being near.
This image is famous in Vedānta and is usually given thus: iron does not burn of itself, but lying in the fire, it burns. Or: the sun does nothing, yet by its presence everything grows and moves.
Here the same thought, but applied to Him who stands beside Sītā on the diagram. He does not act — from His nearness she acts.
Set this beside the sixth verse of the fourth Upaniṣad, where They were compared to the moon and the moonlight. There it was said that He shines by her; here — that she acts by Him.
And nowhere is it said that either of the two does without the other.
The next paragraph will name her by name and explain why she is called Sītā.
