A sin done in a holy place, and with forethought at that.
The śāstras count this an aggravation: in a tīrtha every deed is multiplied, the good and the evil alike. He who sins there sins doubly, for he sins where he came to be cleansed.
And Kurukṣetra is named — the very one with which the whole uttara-tāpanī began.
Recall its first chapter. Bṛhaspati asked what Kurukṣetra is; he was answered that it is the avimukta, and that “wherever anyone goes, let him think it that very place”.
Here its name appears again, and in the directly opposite connection: not as a place of salvation, but as a place where one can sin.
This neighbourhood is instructive. The holiness of a place does not shield the one standing in it; it only magnifies what he does.
Hence the book transferred the avimukta into the man — into the joint of brows and nose, as the third chapter said. The place that is always with you can be neither defiled nor abandoned.
