वैशंपायन उवाच
इत्य् उक्त्वा पाण्डवः क्रुद्धो गन्धर्वाय मुमोच ह ॥
प्रदीप्तम् अस्त्रम् आग्नेयं ददाहास्य रथं तु तत् ॥
विरथं विप्लुतं तं तु स गन्धर्वं महाबलम् ॥
अस्त्रतेजःप्रमूढं च प्रपतन्तम् अवाङ्मुखम् ॥
शिरोरुहेषु जग्राह माल्यवत्सु धनंजयः ॥
भ्रातॄन् प्रति चकर्षाथ सो ऽस्त्रपाताद् अचेतसम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
ity uktvā pāṇḍavaḥ kruddho gandharvāya mumoca ha ||
pradīptam astram āgneyaṃ dadāhāsya rathaṃ tu tat ||
virathaṃ viplutaṃ taṃ tu sa gandharvaṃ mahābalam ||
astratejaḥpramūḍhaṃ ca prapatantam avāṅmukham ||
śiroruheṣu jagrāha mālyavatsu dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
bhrātṝn prati cakarṣātha so 'strapātād acetasam ||
"Having said this, the enraged son of Pandu loosed at the gandharva the blazing weapon of Agni, and it burned his chariot. That mighty gandharva, chariotless, overthrown, stupefied by the weapon's power, falling headlong, Dhananjaya seized by his garland-entwined hair and dragged toward his brothers, senseless from the blow of the weapon."

Here the gandharva's arrogance is toppled in a single instant. It is telling that the one who boasted of his strength and his forbidden forest is now dragged by the hair, senseless: boasting is shattered by deed. Here we see how swiftly pride is humbled before true power: the higher it rose, the lower its fall. Thus the text shows the disgrace of vanity; and the gandharva who threatened newcomers finds himself in the power of the one he meant to frighten.
