The crown of Upamanyu’s trial is not the restored sight itself, but that even before the gods and desirable food he does not break his guru’s will. The Ashvins tempt him twice, even citing the example of his own teacher — yet the true disciple tastes nothing without first offering it to his preceptor. This unbending faithfulness surpasses mere obedience to example: it rests on love and principle, not imitation. Therefore the gods, won over by his devotion to the guru, bless him. Here is concealed a higher principle: to take nothing for oneself, but to offer everything first — ultimately, to the Lord (as prasad). Upamanyu, offering food to his guru, prefigures the devotee who offers everything to Krishna and accepts only the remnants. Thus devotion to the teacher becomes a school of devotion to God, and the ‘golden teeth’ and restored sight he gains are but outward signs of the inner wealth won through faithfulness.
