Suta said: Janamejaya, son of Parikshit, together with his brothers, was performing a long sacrifice (sattra) on the field of Kurukshetra. He had three brothers: Shrutasena, Ugrasena, and Bhimasena. While they were attending that sattra, a dog came near -- the son of Sarama, the celestial bitch. Beaten by the brothers of Janamejaya, he ran whimpering to his mother. Seeing him weeping, his mother asked, "Why are you crying? Who beat you?" To this he answered his mother, "I was beaten by the brothers of Janamejaya." The mother said to him, "Surely you did something wrong there, since you were beaten." He answered her again, "I have done no wrong: I did not look at the sacrificial offerings, nor did I lick them." Hearing this, his mother Sarama, stricken with grief for her son, went to that sattra where Janamejaya and his brothers were performing the long sacrifice. Enraged, she said to him there, "This son of mine is guilty of nothing -- why then was he beaten? And since he, blameless and having done no harm, was beaten, an unforeseen calamity shall come upon you." Thus addressed by the divine bitch Sarama, Janamejaya became greatly alarmed and dejected.
