शुश्रूषा यदि वो विप्रा ब्रुवतश् च कथाः शुभाः ।

The suta responds to the request by naming the chief condition -- the "desire to hear" (shushrusha). Shushrusha is not mere curiosity but a reverent, attentive readiness to receive the word; in the tradition it also signifies service, for hearing about the Lord is itself a form of serving Him. Only to one who holds such a thirst does the auspicious narrative open itself. Thus is underscored the eternal law of the transmission of sacred knowledge: it descends upon one who desires it humbly and eagerly.
