The days of command of the great Kuru generals are listed: Bhishma — ten days, Drona — five, Karna — two, Shalya — half a day, and then — the duel with maces (between Bhima and Duryodhana). Behind this succession stands the relentless march of Time: one after another the greatest warriors fall, and none of their might can halt what is foreordained. The eighteen days of battle are the tread of the Lord's will, lifting the burden of the earth. Thus even the chronology of the battle reminds us: everything comes to pass in its appointed time, set by the Supreme, and reliance on strength alone inevitably collapses.
