The Shalya-parva brings the war to its close. Duryodhana's fall in the mace duel — a blow struck by Bhima against the thighs, against the rules of combat — comes at Krishna's sign and in fulfillment of Bhima's long-standing vow. Thus scripture shows that retribution for the insult Duryodhana inflicted on Draupadi, when he bared his thigh before her, overtakes him exactly there. The Lord's supreme justice is inescapable, even when it comes through the breaking of worldly rules. The praise of the tirthas of the Sarasvati amid the accounts of slaughter is a reminder that even in the hour of universal destruction the earth still holds sacred places that purify the soul, and that refuge lies in holiness and in the Lord, not in martial might, which turns to dust.
