एको रथो गजश् चैको नराः पञ्च पदातयः ।
त्रयश् च तुरगास् तज्ज्ञैः पत्तिर् इत्य् अभिधीयते ॥
पत्तिं तु त्रिगुणाम् एताम् आहुः सेनामुखं बुधाः ।
त्रीणि सेनामुखान्य् एको गुल्म इत्य् अभिधीयते ॥
त्रयो गुल्मा गणो नाम वाहिनी तु गणास् त्रयः ।
स्मृतास् तिस्रस् तु वाहिन्यः पृतनेति विचक्षणैः ॥
चमूस् तु पृतनास् तिस्रस् तिस्रश् चम्वस् त्व् अनीकिनी ।
अनीकिनीं दशगुणां प्राहुर् अक्षौहिणीं बुधाः ॥

Traducción

One chariot, one elephant, five foot-soldiers, and three horses -- this the knowledgeable call a "patti". A patti taken threefold the wise call a "senamukha"; three senamukhas make a "gulma". Three gulmas are called a "gana", and three ganas a "vahini"; three vahinis the discerning reckon a "pritana". Three pritanas make a "chamu", and three chamus an "anikini"; an anikini taken tenfold the wise call an "akshauhini".

Comentario

Here is given the precise structure of an akshauhini: from the smallest unit, the "patti" (one chariot, one elephant, three horses, five foot-soldiers), rising by threefold multiplication through senamukha, gulma, gana, vahini, pritana, chamu, anikini -- up to the akshauhini (ten anikinis). This orderly, carefully calibrated system testifies to the high degree of order in Vedic culture. But for the thoughtful listener something else matters more: all this immense military might, gathered at Kurukshetra, is precisely that "burden of the earth" which the Lord descends to lift. However colossal an army may be, it is transient and subject to the will of the Supreme; in this lies a silent lesson on the futility of relying on force rather than on the Lord.
