The Anushasana-parva completes Bhishma's teaching and his earthly journey. Having awaited the auspicious northern solstice (uttarayana), he leaves the body with mind and gaze fixed upon the Lord — a model of iccha-mrityu, death by one's own will, and of the devotee's perfect departure. Among the many precepts on giving, conduct, and truth, the heart of it remains the 'Vishnu-sahasranama' and the teaching that remembrance of the Lord surpasses all rites and gifts. The glorification of satya (truthfulness) and of giving teaches that outward dharma must lead to inner purity and devotion. Bhishma's departure is not sorrow but triumph: a great devotee returns to the Lord, and his very death becomes an instruction in how one should meet the end — with the name of Krishna and without fear.
