Traducción

Thus, in brief, through the survey of the parvans (Parva-samgraha), the whole [Maha]bharata has been told. Eighteen akshauhinis [armies] met, eager for battle; that great, terrible battle lasted eighteen days. One who knows the four Vedas with their angas and Upanishads, but does not know this tale, is not yet wise. Having heard this tale, a person no longer finds delight in any other narrative — as after the sweet song of the cuckoo the crow's harsh cry [is unwelcome]. From this best of narratives (itihasa) are born the conceptions of poets — as the three worlds [arise] from the five elements. Within the domain of this narrative dwells all ancient lore (purana), as the four kinds of beings [dwell] in space. This tale is the foundation of every kind of action and quality, just as the activity of the mind is [the foundation and seat] of all the senses.
