The list of the books (sub-parvas) of the Mahabharata begins: Parvanukramani, Parva-samgraha, Paushya, Pauloma, Astika, Adivamshavatarana… This roster of sections is the architecture of the whole epic, laid out in strict order. The very existence of so deliberate a table of contents confirms that the Mahabharata is not a random collection of tales but a whole, ordered work by an incarnation of the Lord; and every part of it, whatever its subject, ultimately serves a single purpose — to reveal the glory of the Supreme.
