This list of sub-parvas traces the Pandavas' path: their escape from the burning lac house, the marriage to Draupadi, the gaining of Indraprastha, the Rajasuya. Through this entire sequence, Lord Krishna shines through. At the Rajasuya it is He who is honored first (agra-puja), and in the sub-parva 'Shishupalavadha' Krishna Himself slays Shishupala — one who ceaselessly reviled Him. Here is a crucial lesson: the Lord long endures abuse (He counted out Shishupala's hundred offenses), but in due time He Himself puts an end to slander against Him and defends His glory; and even the offender, struck down by the Lord's own hand, attains liberation. Thus even the plain table of contents of the epic quietly leads toward the deeds of Krishna, for whose sake the entire Mahabharata was composed.
