पौष्ये पर्वणि माहात्म्यम् उत्तङ्कस्योपवर्णितम् ।
पौलोमे भृगुवंशस्य विस्तारः परिकीर्तितः ॥

paulome bhṛguvaṃśasya vistāraḥ parikīrtitaḥ ||
āstīke sarvanāgānāṃ garuḍasya ca saṃbhavaḥ |
kṣīrodamathanaṃ caiva janmocchaiḥśravasas tathā ||
yajataḥ sarpasatreṇa rājñaḥ pārikṣitasya ca |
katheyam abhinirvṛttā bhāratānāṃ mahātmanām ||
In the Paushya-parva the greatness of Uttanka is described; in the Pauloma the expansion of the Bhrigu lineage is recounted. In the Astika-parva — the birth of all the nagas and of Garuda, the churning of the Milk Ocean, and the birth of the horse Ucchaihshravas; and [it tells] how, for the king, the son of Parikshit (Janamejaya), who was performing the snake sacrifice, this tale of the great-souled Bharatas arose.

These opening sub-books set the frame for the whole epic. The tale of the great Bharatas was told at the snake sacrifice of Janamejaya (Parikshit's son), where Vaishampayana, at Vyasa's bidding, recounted the Mahabharata — so knowledge descends through succession in a sacred setting. Especially noteworthy is the churning of the Milk Ocean: there, according to the scriptures, the Lord Himself appeared as the tortoise Kurma, bearing the mountain, and as Mohini distributed the nectar to the gods — a deed of Vishnu for the protection of His devotee-gods. Thus even the framing tales quietly lead toward the Lord and His deeds.
