The sages ask for an explanation of the structure of the army division -- the akshauhini. Their wish to know "exactly" (yathavat) is the model of a diligent listener, not content with the approximate. Though the matter concerns worldly affairs, this very striving for clear knowledge is valuable: a mind trained in precision and attention absorbs higher truths better as well. In the epic, everything, even the counting of armies, ultimately serves to reveal the Lord's plan to lift the burden of the earth.
