The twentieth name is “the eight grahas”.
Graha means “the grasping, the taking one”. Usually the planets are so called, and usually they are nine: the seven luminaries plus Rāhu and Ketu. Here they are eight — a count met in the old books, meaning, it seems, the row without Ketu.
But the word has another, ritual meaning as well: graha is the cup with which soma is drawn.
We examined both sides in reading the tenth section of the Atharvaśiras, where the same “eight grahas” stood.
This agreement shows once more from what source both litanies come.
Note that the planets in the Indian reckoning are not mere luminaries: they take a man into their terms and hold him. And now the grasping ones are named He — and this is the real deliverance from the fear of the stars: not a denial of their power, but the knowledge of whose power it is.
