The twenty-seventh name is prāṇa, the breath, and it is set immediately after the three names of death.
This neighbourhood is better than any argument.
Prāṇa in the Upaniṣads is what is nearest and least noticed. One does not choose it and does not remember it; it goes on while a man is busy with other things.
The Kauṣītaki identifies it with Brahman, and its whole third adhyāya proves the primacy of breath: without speech, sight and mind one lives; without it, no.
And now, after death, Yama and the Ender, is named that with which you breathe.
Note that in the Brahma Upaniṣad too the first thing said in answer to Śaunaka's question was: prāṇo hy eṣa ātmā — “for the breath is this very Ātman”.
