ते वयं नयम् आस्थाय शत्रुदेहसमीपगाः ॥
कथम् अन्तं न गच्छेम वृक्षस्येव नदीरयाः ॥
पररन्ध्रे पराक्रान्ताः स्वरन्ध्रावरणे स्थिताः ॥
व्यूढानीकैर् अनुबलैर् नोपेयाद् बलवत्तरम् ॥
इति बुद्धिमतां नीतिस् तन् ममापीह रोचते ॥

te vayaṃ nayam āsthāya śatrudehasamīpagāḥ ||
katham antaṃ na gacchema vṛkṣasyeva nadīrayāḥ ||
pararandhre parākrāntāḥ svarandhrāvaraṇe sthitāḥ ||
vyūḍhānīkair anubalair nopeyād balavattaram ||
iti buddhimatāṃ nītis tan mamāpīha rocate ||

Translation

‘Having resorted to policy and approached the very body of the enemy, how shall we not reach his end — as a river's current undermines the roots of a tree? Striking into the enemy's vulnerable point, while keeping our own flaws covered. One should not approach the strongest with [full] arrays and reinforcements — such is the policy of the wise, and this pleases me here.’
