Krishna said: ‘The thought that befits one born in the line of Bharata and the son of Kunti has indeed been shown by Arjuna. We do not know the hour of death — whether by night or by day; and we have not heard of anyone becoming immortal by avoiding battle either.’

Here the Lord reminds us that death cannot be escaped: fleeing from battle grants no immortality. It is telling that remembrance of death is not a summons to despair but to right action: since all are destined to die, it is better to fall while doing one's duty. Thus the scripture shows that the thought of death becomes a spur to valor; and next comes the strength of sound policy.
