Below them — two with fans in their hands; and again a triangle arises. So the first hexagon is composed, with its long limbs.

Two triangles — one point up, the other point down — are laid on each other and yield the hexagon.
This figure is well known in the diagrams and means the joining of two principles: masculine and feminine, ascending and descending. The Gopāla-tāpanī built its yantra on the same ground, setting the triangles inside the lotus.
Here, however, the hexagon has come not out of speculation but out of the placing of living persons. The first triangle — Rāma with the brothers and Hanumān; the second — the allies and the fan-bearers. They composed themselves not because the science of diagrams so commands, but because such was the court at Ayodhyā.
This is the book's general move: first the tradition, then the figure. And therefore its diagram is no dry scheme — behind each of its corners stands someone's name.
The word svadīrghāṅga — “its long limbs” — means the rays going out from the corners; along them the following circles will be placed.
From here to the Upaniṣad's end will go the description of these circles: the second, the third, then the lotuses with letters, then the syllables of the mantras. The living persons will gradually yield place to sounds.
