The thirty-fourth mantra names the twelve Ādityas — the sons of Aditi.
Aditi means “the boundless, the unbound”; she is the mother of the gods. Her sons are counted as twelve, and usually matched with the twelve months: the sun of each month is its own Āditya.
Thus in this mantra the year is named again — that is, time — as in the twenty-ninth the stars were named and in the thirtieth the planets.
The count of the thirty-three is completed: eight, eleven, twelve — thirty-one; the two besides are named differently by different books.
In the fifty-second verse of the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva Dhātṛ and the sacrificial cry “vaṣaṭ” were added to the Ādityas; I noted then that among the gods was counted not a god but an exclamation.
The next mantra will leave the gods and name time itself — directly and without names.
