अवस्थात्रितयेष्वेवं बुद्धिपूर्वमघं च यत् । तन्मन्त्रस्मरणेनैव निःशेषं प्रविलीयते

avasthātritayeṣvevaṃ buddhipūrvamaghaṃ ca yat | tanmantrasmaraṇenaiva niḥśeṣaṃ pravilīyate

An expression appears that has not yet been in the list: avasthā-tritaya — “the three states”.
These are waking, dreaming sleep and deep sleep — those very three feet of the Ātman which the second chapter of the uttara examined by the Māṇḍūkya.
So sins in dream too are meant.
This is no idle subtlety. A man answers for what he does awake; but everyone knows the other thing too — what is done in dream, where he has no power over himself and where the hidden comes out.
The śāstras examine such things and appoint purifications for them.
Here it is said: this too.
Note the change of means: not “proclaiming” and not “performance”, but mantra-smaraṇa — “the remembrance of the mantra”.
And understandably. In dream one does not utter, and rites are not performed; there is only memory there — what remains of the day's practice.
That is why the fifth paragraph of this chapter demanded repeating nityam, “constantly”: so that in dream there be something to surface.
