यः स्वरूपपरिभ्रंशश्चेत्वार्थे चिति मज्जनम् एतस्मादपरो मोहो न भूतो न भविष्यति

“The falling away from one's own nature — that is, the sinking of consciousness into the object: a blinding other than this has never been and never will be.”

The definition of delusion is reduced to one thing: citi majjanam arthe — “the sinking of consciousness into the object”.
The word majjana means “drowning, submersion over one's head”. Not “attention to the object”, but precisely going into it entire, so that nothing of oneself remains.
This is the falling away from one's own nature.
Note that here too neither the object nor attention to it is condemned. The drowning is condemned.
The difference shows in a simple experience. One can read a book and know that one is reading; or one can go into it so far as to forget where one is and what hour it is. The second is pleasant — and it is also the very pattern of what the verse speaks of.
And the verdict is firm: na bhūto na bhaviṣyati — no blinding stronger than this “has been or will be”. All else is consequences.
