द्रष्टारं पश्यतो नित्यमद्रष्टारमपश्यतः विज्ञातव्ये परे तत्त्वे जागरूकस्य जीवतः

The list continues, and in it — the most important of the marks.
Draṣṭāraṃ paśyataḥ — “seeing the seer”. Attention is turned upon the one who looks, not upon what is looked at.
This is the whole turn. All our lives we look outward; to turn the gaze upon the looker is the only change required.
Adraṣṭāram apaśyataḥ — “and not seeing the non-seer”: he does not take for himself that which does not itself see — matter, the body, states.
Note the word jāgarūka — “vigilant, wakeful”. It is of the same root as jāgrat, but denotes not a state but a property: one who is awake as such.
And jīvataḥ — “living”. He is alive, not sunk in torpor. This was spoken of already in 5.7 and 5.50.
