तां गच्छन्तीम् अन्वगच्छत् तदानीं; सो ऽपश्यद् आरात् तरुणं दर्शनीयम् ॥
सिंहासनस्थं युवतीसहायं; क्रीडन्तम् अक्षैर् गिरिराजमूर्ध्नि ॥
तम् अब्रवीद् देवराजो ममेदं; त्वं विद्धि विश्वं भुवनं वशे स्थितम् ॥
ईशो ऽहम् अस्मीति समन्युर् अब्रवीद्; दृष्ट्वा तम् अक्षैः सुभृशं प्रमत्तम् ॥

vyāsa uvāca
tāṃ gacchantīm anvagacchat tadānīṃ; so 'paśyad ārāt taruṇaṃ darśanīyam ||
siṃhāsanasthaṃ yuvatīsahāyaṃ; krīḍantam akṣair girirājamūrdhni ||
tam abravīd devarājo mamedaṃ; tvaṃ viddhi viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ vaśe sthitam ||
īśo 'ham asmīti samanyur abravīd; dṛṣṭvā tam akṣaiḥ subhṛśaṃ pramattam ||

Translation

"Following her, he saw not far off a handsome youth, seated on a lion throne, with a young woman beside him, playing at dice on the summit of Himavat. The king of gods said to him: 'Know that this universe is mine, the world stands in my power, I am the lord!' -- he said in anger, seeing him absorbed in the game."
