व्यास उवाच
तां गच्छन्तीम् अन्वगच्छत् तदानीं; सो ऽपश्यद् आरात् तरुणं दर्शनीयम् ॥
सिंहासनस्थं युवतीसहायं; क्रीडन्तम् अक्षैर् गिरिराजमूर्ध्नि ॥
तम् अब्रवीद् देवराजो ममेदं; त्वं विद्धि विश्वं भुवनं वशे स्थितम् ॥
ईशो ऽहम् अस्मीति समन्युर् अब्रवीद्; दृष्ट्वा तम् अक्षैः सुभृशं प्रमत्तम् ॥
vyāsa uvāca
tāṃ gacchantīm anvagacchat tadānīṃ; so 'paśyad ārāt taruṇaṃ darśanīyam ||
siṃhāsanasthaṃ yuvatīsahāyaṃ; krīḍantam akṣair girirājamūrdhni ||
tam abravīd devarājo mamedaṃ; tvaṃ viddhi viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ vaśe sthitam ||
īśo 'ham asmīti samanyur abravīd; dṛṣṭvā tam akṣaiḥ subhṛśaṃ pramattam ||
"Following her, he saw not far off a handsome youth, seated on a lion throne, with a young woman beside him, playing at dice on the summit of Himavat. The king of gods said to him: 'Know that this universe is mine, the world stands in my power, I am the lord!' -- he said in anger, seeing him absorbed in the game."

Here Indra's pride dares before the Lord Himself, without recognizing Him. It is telling that Indra, not knowing that Shiva stands before him, boasts, "I am the lord of the universe." Here it is shown how self-conceit blinds: the one who has risen high fails to recognize the Highest and lays claim to what belongs to Him alone. Thus scripture shows the danger of pride; and Indra's insolence before God will at once be humbled.
