कच्चिद् अर्थाश् च कल्पन्ते धर्मे च रमते मनः ॥
सुखानि चानुभूयन्ते मनश् च न विहन्यते ॥

Here the first question sets the measure of everything — the harmony of life's three aims. It is significant that Narada asks not about profit alone, nor piety alone, but about their concord: a righteous life does not reject labor or joy, but subordinates them to dharma. Thus the scripture lays the foundation of the teaching; and next the parts of royal duty are unfolded.
