Here are gathered together the ruin of a king -- from godlessness to indulgence in passions. It is telling that "nastikya", godlessness, is named first: where faith in the higher is lost, every other foundation crumbles as well. Scripture thus shows that the root of all a king's troubles is falling away from the sacred; what follows concerns the four fruits [of the Vedas, wealth, wife, and learning].
