कच्चित् द्वौ प्रथमौ यामौ रात्र्याम् सुप्त्वा विशाम् पतेkaccit dvau prathamau yāmau rātryām suptvā viśām pateI hope that, having slept through the first two watches of the night, O lord of the people,
संचिन्तयसि धर्म-अर्थौ यामे उत्थाय पश्चिमेsaṃcintayasi dharma-arthau yāme utthāya paścimein the last watch, having risen, you ponder dharma and artha;
कच्चित् दर्शयसे नित्यम् मनुष्यान् सु-अलंकृतान्kaccit darśayase nityam manuṣyān su-alaṃkṛtānI hope you always show yourself to people, [yourself] well adorned,
उत्थाय काले काल-ज्ञः सह पाण्डव मन्त्रिभिःutthāya kāle kāla-jñaḥ saha pāṇḍava mantribhiḥhaving risen at the [proper] time, a knower of time, O Pandava, together with your counselors;
कच्चित् रक्त-अम्बर-धराः खड्ग-हस्ताः सु-अलंकृताःkaccit rakta-ambara-dharāḥ khaḍga-hastāḥ su-alaṃkṛtāḥI hope that, clad in red garments, swords in hand, well adorned,
अभितः त्वाम् उपासन्ते रक्षण-अर्थम् अरिंदमabhitaḥ tvām upāsante rakṣaṇa-artham ariṃdamathey stand about you on every side for your protection, O conqueror of enemies?

Here even the routine of day and night is subordinated to dharma: the king rises to reflect on duty before undertaking affairs. It is significant that accessibility to the people ("you show yourself") is joined with vigilant protection: openness and caution are not in conflict. Thus the scripture shows the ordered life of a ruler; what follows concerns justice and health.
