परान् जिगीषसे पार्थ प्रमत्तान् अजित-इन्द्रियान्parān jigīṣase pārtha pramattān ajita-indriyānyou seek to overcome your enemies -- the careless, who have not subdued their senses, o Partha;

Here true victory begins with victory over oneself. It is telling that the one who has subdued his senses overcomes the careless: inward mastery of self is the root of all outward strength. And the four means -- conciliation, gift, dissension, punishment -- precede the sword: the wise wage war first with reason, and with weapons only as a last resort. Thus scripture shows self-mastery and calculation as the foundation of victory; what follows concerns the ordering of the army.
