Here the duty of governance is joined by the duty of reverence—through sacrifice and homage. It is significant that homage is paid not only to gods and brahmins but also to elders, ascetics, and even sacred trees: humility before the sacred in all its forms adorns the mighty. Thus the scripture shows piety as the crown of a king's virtues; what follows is the summation of the whole teaching.
