प्रकृतिम् परिचक्षतेprakṛtim paricakṣatethey hold as its foundation;

ततः अन्ये क्षत्रियाः भुविtataḥ anye kṣatriyāḥ bhuviand other kshatriyas on earth;
ऐल-वंश्याः तु ये राजन्aila-vaṃśyāḥ tu ye rājanwhichever are of the line of Aila, O king,
तथा एव इक्ष्वाकवः नृपाःtathā eva ikṣvākavaḥ nṛpāḥand the kings of the line of Ikshvaku —
तानि च एक-शतम् विद्धिtāni ca eka-śatam viddhiknow that these number one hundred and one
कुलानि भरत-ऋषभkulāni bharata-ṛṣabhalineages, O bull of the Bharatas;
ययातेः तु एव भोजानाम्yayāteḥ tu eva bhojānāmand from Yayati, of the Bhojas,
विस्तरः अति-गुणः महान्vistaraḥ ati-guṇaḥ mahānthe expansion, most excellent and great,

Here Krishna sets out the genealogy of the kingdoms soberly and precisely. It is telling that counsel begins with knowledge of the situation rather than impulse: before acting, the wise take stock of the world's strengths. Scripture thus shows thoroughness as part of good counsel; and next comes the one who broke the concord among the lineages.
