Caitanya-candrāmṛta
"The Moon-Nectar of Caitanya" — 144 verses by Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī, written not long after he met Śrī Caitanya himself. It tells no story: there are almost no events here, only one astonishment repeated a hundred and forty-four ways. The world, says the poet, has been turned over: the name of God breaks out of mouths that did nothing to deserve it, a heart hard as diamond melts, yesterday's sinner dances and rolls on the ground, while the scholar and the ascetic are left with nothing. Hence the book's steady mockery of the ladder of merit: liberation is called wretched, dharma insufficient, and everything turns on a drop of honey given away for free. Prabodhānanda had been an honoured Vedāntin in the South; that makes his renunciation of all he owned, for this one taste, sound the sharper.
