चतुष्पादं दशविधं धनुर्वेदम् अरिंदमः ॥
अर्जुनाद् वेद वेदज्ञात् सकलं दिव्यमानुषम् ॥
विज्ञानेष्व् अपि चास्त्राणां सौष्ठवे च महाबलः ॥
क्रियास्व् अपि च सर्वासु विशेषान् अभ्यशिक्षयत् ॥
आगमे च प्रयोगे च चक्रे तुल्यम् इवात्मनः ॥
तुतोष पुत्रं सौभद्रं प्रेक्षमाणो धनंजयः ॥
सर्वसंहननोपेतं सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम् ॥
दुर्धर्षम् ऋषभस्कन्धं व्यात्ताननम् इवोरगम् ॥
सिंहदर्पं महेष्वासं मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमम् ॥
मेघदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननम् ॥
कृष्णस्य सदृशं शौर्ये वीर्ये रूपे तथाकृतौ ॥
ददर्श पुत्रं बीभत्सुर् मघवान् इव तं यथा ॥

vijñāneṣv api cāstrāṇāṃ sauṣṭhave ca mahābalaḥ ||

tutoṣa putraṃ saubhadraṃ prekṣamāṇo dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
sarvasaṃhananopetaṃ sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitam ||
durdharṣam ṛṣabhaskandhaṃ vyāttānanam ivoragam ||
siṃhadarpaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ mattamātaṅgavikramam ||
meghadundubhinirghoṣaṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanam ||
kṛṣṇasya sadṛśaṃ śaurye vīrye rūpe tathākṛtau ||
dadarśa putraṃ bībhatsur maghavān iva taṃ yathā ||
The fourfold, tenfold Dhanurveda, both divine and human, he learned in full from Arjuna, knower of the Vedas; in knowledge of weapons, in skill, and in every technique Arjuna taught him their finer points; in theory and in practice he made him his equal. Dhananjaya rejoiced in his son Saubhadra, beholding him — endowed with every bodily strength, marked with all auspicious signs, unconquerable, bull-shouldered, lion-proud, a great archer, with the fury of a maddened elephant, with a voice like thundercloud and drum, with a face like the full moon, resembling Krishna in valor, might, beauty, and form. Bibhatsu beheld his son, as Indra beheld his own.

Here a father makes his son his equal and rejoices in him. It is significant that Arjuna teaches Abhimanyu 'as himself': a generous teacher withholds no knowledge but pours it out in full. Significant too is the son's likeness to Krishna: in him is reflected something of the Lord's own splendor. Here is a father's joy in a worthy heir. So the scripture shows forth Abhimanyu's perfections; and his valor is both Arjuna's delight and the pledge of glory to come.
