अतर्पयत् च विविधैःatarpayat ca vividhaiḥand satisfied various
वसुभिः ब्राह्मणान् तथाvasubhiḥ brāhmaṇān tathāriches the brahmins,
प्रासर्प-काले संप्राप्तेprāsarpa-kāle saṃprāptewhen the time of the festive gathering arrived,
नाना-दिग्भ्यः समागतान्nānā-digbhyaḥ samāgatānwho had come together from various directions;
भक्ष्यैः भोज्यैः च विविधैःbhakṣyaiḥ bhojyaiḥ ca vividhaiḥwith food and various dishes,
यथा-काम-पुरस्कृतैःyathā-kāma-puraskṛtaiḥserved according to their wish,
रत्न-ओघ-तर्पितैः तुष्टैःratna-ogha-tarpitaiḥ tuṣṭaiḥsated with streams of gems, satisfied
द्विजैः च समुदाहृतम्dvijaiḥ ca samudāhṛtamthe brahmins proclaimed [his greatness];
तेजस्वी च यशस्वी चtejasvī ca yaśasvī ca[and] radiant, and glorious
नृपेभ्यः अभ्यधिकः अभवत्nṛpebhyaḥ abhyadhikaḥ abhavathe became above [other] kings;
एतस्मात् कारणात् पार्थetasmāt kāraṇāt pārthafor this reason, O Partha,
हरिश्चन्द्रः विराजतेhariścandraḥ virājateHarishchandra shines

Here the cause of heavenly honor is named directly: the contentment of well-fed brahmins. It is telling that the king's glory grew not from rumor but from the blessing of the wise whom he had gratified: the gratitude of those benefited exalts a man higher than any praise. Thus the scripture shows generosity toward the worthy to be a source of lasting glory; and next comes the general law of such reward.
