The contemplation proper begins, and every feature in it speaks.
Śyāma — “dark”, the colour of a storm cloud; pīta-vāsas — “in yellow raiment”. This pair is familiar from all the descriptions of Viṣṇu and Kṛṣṇa; it is set first, to bind Rāma with them at once.
The two-armedness, dvibhuja, is marked deliberately. The first Upaniṣad listed forms of four, eight, sixteen and a thousand arms; here He is two-armed — that is, shown as a man, as the third Upaniṣad said.
Jaṭādhara — “with matted locks” — is the ascetic's trait: so hair is worn in the forest. Its joining with a prince's jewelled necklace and earrings is no contradiction but an exact portrait: an exiled king.
Dhīra — “steadfast, unshaken”. This word attends Rāma constantly in the tradition and means not insensibility but immovability amid losses.
And the verse's first words — prakṛtyā sahitaḥ, “together with Prakṛti”. Sītā is named here not by name but by essence: nature, the first ground. It is not He alone who is contemplated; nowhere does the book allow Him to be severed from her.
