Who thus constantly repeats the king of mantras — the six syllables of Śrī-Rāmacandra — he becomes purified by fire, by wind, by the sun, by the moon, by Brahmā, by Viṣṇu, by Rudra; he is known to all the gods; he is as one who has offered all sacrifices; to him are credited hundreds of thousands of recitations of the histories, the purāṇas and the rudras, and myriads of recitations of the praṇava; he purifies ten forebears and ten descendants, he becomes the purifier of the company, becomes great and attains immortality.

The list of fruits, and in it three classes worth distinguishing.
The first — purification: by fire, wind, sun, moon and the three chief gods. Seven purifications, and all of them are what purifies in the rite: fire burns, wind dries, the sun shines through.
The second — crediting: “as one who has offered all sacrifices”, “as one who has recited hundreds of thousands”. The device is usual in the śāstras and should not disturb: it is a way of saying that the measure here is different.
And the third — and it is the most remarkable: “he purifies ten forebears and ten descendants”.
This deserves weighing. The fruit of repetition does not stay with the repeater: it goes up and down the line, to those already dead and to those not yet born.
The word paṅkti-pāvana means “the purifier of the row”: one whose presence at the common meal makes it clean. An ancient and very human notion — there are people in whose presence the table becomes different.
The same measure we saw in the third chapter of the uttara, where liberation was promised to all dying in Kāśī, down to the worms. Here it spreads to the kin.
The fruit in these books is never private.
