The promise narrows and at the same time deepens: before, the speech was of the dying; now — of the worshipping.
And for the first time in this chapter a condition is named: bhaktyā, “with bhakti”.
This is the word's third occurrence in the book. The first time it stood with Hanumān in the twentieth verse of the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva; the second — at the very end of the pūrva-tāpanī, where the devotees “attain the highest place”. Now it is spoken by the mouth of Rāma Himself.
The sins named are the same as in the fourth paragraph of the previous chapter: brahma-hatyādi, “the slaying of a brāhmaṇa and the rest”. There the mantra ferried across them; here He Himself frees — mokṣayiṣyāmi, “I shall free”, in the first person.
This difference is worth keeping. The mantra ferries; but He whose name it is frees in person.
And the last two words, which no one expects: mā śucaḥ — “do not grieve”.
The same two words stand in the Gītā, in Kṛṣṇa's last instruction to Arjuna: “abandon all dharmas, come to Me alone, I will deliver thee from all sins, do not grieve.”
The coincidence is hardly accidental. The book sets at the decisive place the very formula with which the Gītā ends.
