इति ॥ अथ सच्चिदानन्दात्मानं श्रीराममीश्वरः पप्रच्छ - मणिकर्ण्यां मम क्षेत्रे गङ्गायां वा तटे पुनः । म्रियेत देही तज्जन्तोः मुक्तिं नातो वरान्तरम्

अनुवाद
Then the Lord asked Śrī-Rāma, whose Self is being, consciousness and bliss: “If at Maṇikarṇikā, in my field, or on the bank of the Gaṅgā an embodied one should die — to that creature liberation! No other boon do I need.”

Śiva asks, and asks not for himself.
This is the whole sense of the paragraph, and it should be spoken outright. He was offered anything; he asked that liberation be given to everyone who dies in his city.
Maṇikarṇikā is the chief burning-ghat of Kāśī, where the pyres never go out. The petition, then, is for those who are carried there.
Set this beside what the gods asked in the sixteenth verse of the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva: there they asked lordship and the foe's destruction. Here nothing of one's own is asked.
And the last words: na ato varāntaram — “no other boon”, that is, more I do not need.
This is why the Vaiṣṇavas call Śiva the greatest of bhaktas. Not for the feat of thousands of manvantaras, but for that in which he resolved the feat.
Note too the address: Rāma is named sac-cid-ānanda-ātman — with the same three words by which the eighth verse of the fifth Upaniṣad of the pūrva named Him. This formula repeats in the book whenever the speech comes to the chief thing.
