A scene the tradition tells at length, and the book would not recall it were there not something important in it.
Sugrīva doubted: śaṅkitaḥ. He is banished by his brother, he is timid and wary, and he does not believe that this wanderer in forest dress can help. And he demands pratyaya — “assurance”, proof.
The carcass of Dundubhi is the skeleton of the buffalo demon whom Vālin once slew; it lay like a hill, and no one could move it. Rāma flung it away with a toe.
Here is what is remarkable: He consented to the test.
He to whom the gods sang praise five verses earlier took no offence at a monkey's distrust and produced his strength on demand. There is not a word of reproach in the verse.
This continues the same trait as the obedience to Śabarī: He goes to meet what is wanted of Him — both for the forest woman and for the timorous ally.
The next verse will finish the test: one arrow clean through seven palms.
