Here the book raises the question Vedānta has debated for centuries: if the Highest is bodiless, whence His form?
First the negations are listed, and all are strict: cinmaya — made of consciousness; advitīya — “without a second”, the famous formula of the Chāndogya; niṣkala — partless, not composed of portions; aśarīrin — bodiless.
And then it is said: rūpa-kalpanā, “the fashioning of a form” — and explained why: upāsakānāṁ kāryārtham, “for the sake of the work of the worshippers”.
The word kalpanā is many-sided, and the whole dispute rests on it. It means both “imagining” and “appointing, establishing, preparing”. Who reads it as “imagining” gets: the form is invented for the weak of mind. Who reads it as “appointing” gets: the form is established for the sake of those who worship.
Vaiṣṇava Vedānta holds to the second reading and leans in this on this very book. For here, in the fourth Upaniṣad, Rāma will be named Brahman with all His features — the bow, the arrow, Sītā at his left hand; and in the uttara-tāpanī it is said that He “shows Himself” to the worshipper. The invented does not show itself.
The exact sense, then, is this: not that a form is attached to the Bodiless, but that the Bodiless is not bound by a material body — and therefore is free to take a form for those who otherwise would have no one to speak to.
The next six verses will examine this thought in detail: how the arms, the weapons, the colours and the retinues of the deities are ordered, and why none of it is arbitrary.
