The eleventh mantra names prāṇa — the breath, the life-force.
This is one of the most laden words of the Upaniṣads. The Kauṣītaki Upaniṣad outright identifies prāṇa with Brahman, and its whole third adhyāya proves the primacy of breath over speech, sight and mind: without them one lives; without it, no.
The second verse of the third Upaniṣad of the pūrva already named Rāma jagat-prāṇa — “the Breath of the world”.
Here the same is said without “the world”: simply prāṇa.
And in this brevity there is its own point. Breath is what is nearest and least noticed. One does not choose it and does not remember it; it goes on while a man is busy with other things.
This is what the mantra points to. He is not only the highest and the far — He is that by which you breathe while reading this line.
The list by this point has descended from Brahman to the body; the next mantra will go further inward — to the mind.
