The sixteenth mantra is set right after the fifteenth, and in this neighbourhood is the whole sense: death — and immortality, one after the other, of one and the same.
Amṛta — “non-death”: the word is formed by the direct negation of what stood in the previous line.
Four mantras in a row went of the end — Yama, the Ender, death; and now the fifth breaks the row.
Here one must stop and see the structure. The doxology did not say “death is dreadful, but God is stronger than it”. It said: both are He.
In this such theology differs from consolation. Consolation opposes; here there is nothing to oppose.
Recall the third paragraph of the second chapter of the uttara: the tāraka ferries “from the great fear of the womb, of birth, of old age, of death and of the round”. Fear, not death, is there named great.
And fear departs when death and immortality prove to be of one name.
