The verse compresses the whole war of Laṅkā into four quarters.
First — udadhīśa, “the lord of the waters”: the ocean. The tradition tells that Rāma sat three days at the shore asking the sea to let the army pass, and, not receiving an answer, took up the bow; and then the sea appeared of itself and showed how to build the bridge. Here it is said simply that the battle was made “together with the lord of the waters”.
Then two are named: ghaṭa-śrotra — “the jar-eared”, that is, Kumbhakarṇa, Rāvaṇa's brother, who slept half a year at a time; and sahasrākṣa-jit — “the conqueror of the Thousand-eyed”, that is, Indrajit, Rāvaṇa's son, who had vanquished Indra himself.
Their names are given descriptively, as riddles — a usual device of the Upaniṣads. And Rāvaṇa himself is named not by name but as “the one who stood with them”.
In all this list not a word about the battle's course. It is enough for the book to name who fell — how exactly, everyone knows.
The next verse will finish: Laṅkā given to Vibhīṣaṇa, Sītā restored.
