To the two a third is added, and the three of them form the first figure of the diagram.
Lakṣmaṇa is set on the right, Sītā on the left and on the knee; Rāma in the middle. Three points — a triangle. So the dhyāna passes imperceptibly into the yantra: what was contemplated begins to be drawn.
This is exactly what the thirteenth verse of the first Upaniṣad said: “the form of the Deity is the fashioning of the yantra”. Here one sees how it is done in fact.
Lakṣmaṇa is named hemābha — “golden-hued”, by the same word as Sītā in the previous verse. And this is no negligence: both of them shine beside the dark Rāma, like light beside a cloud.
In his hand a bow — the same as his brother's. Rāma's companion is no unarmed attendant: he is armed alike and stands in battle at his side.
Tradition remembers that Lakṣmaṇa went into exile without being exiled, and that for fourteen years he did not sleep, guarding the two. Hence his place in the diagram is not honorary but earned.
