The thirty-fifth mantra names the three times: bhūtam, bhavyam, bhaviṣyat — what was, what is and what shall be.
These three words have stood in this very book already, and stood in the most important place: in the ninth paragraph of the second chapter of the uttara, where the Māṇḍūkya was cited. “The past, the present and the future — all this is the Oṁkāra; and what else is beyond the three times — that too is the Oṁkāra.”
Here the same formula, but the subject is named by name.
This is the whole device of the chapter, and on this mantra it is especially clear. What is said of the syllable Oṁ is said of Rāmacandra.
Note that there there was an addition: “and what else is beyond the three times”. Here it is absent, and rightly: the forty-second, forty-fifth and forty-seventh mantras will name the transcendent separately.
In the sixty-third verse of the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva there flickered amid the secret code the expression nārāyaṇātmakaḥ kālaḥ — “time consisting of Nārāyaṇa”. I said then: time is not faceless and therefore no enemy.
