The letters are named not by name but descriptively: antya — “the last”; aṅghri — “the foot”; īśa — “the lord”; viyat — “the void, the ether”. Each word points to a certain sound by an agreed chart.
So the seed syllable of Varāha is written down.
The verse's first half speaks of quite another business: graha-māraṇa-karman — the rite of “slaying the seizure”. Graha means “grasping” and denotes what has seized a man: an illness, a possession, an evil star.
The mantra of Nṛsiṃha is used against such things, and this is common knowledge: He is the one who tears apart the seizer.
Let me say here what should be said once for all. Our book is not theology alone; it knows the rite, the healing and the protection too, and is not ashamed of it. The first Upaniṣad spoke outright of the “application at one's own wish”.
