The third Upaniṣad is the shortest, only two verses — and it begins with what has not yet sounded in the book: beside Rāma, Sītā is named.
It is said: “Sītā and Rāma, made of Him, are here to be worshipped.” The word tanmaya — “made of the same” — means both are of one nature with the Highest; she is no creature at His side.
This is the direct continuation of the first Upaniṣad, where among the five classes of the fashioning of form śakti was named. Here that power is named by name, and named not a servant but co-worshipped: pūjyau — the dual, “both are to be worshipped”.
Then the work of this pair is told: “from them the fourteen worlds are born, by them they stand and by them are directed”. Three verbs cover everything — birth, standing, direction; and their subject is dual. Not He alone and not she alone: both create, uphold and rule.
The fourteen worlds are the usual chart of the universe: seven upper and seven lower; we saw their ladder in the tenth khaṇḍa of the Subāla.
And the last line returns to earth: “therefore Rāma, being a man, ordained this by his power”. The word mānava, “man”, is set where a moment ago the birth of worlds was spoken of. The book never for a minute lets go of this doubleness: He from whom the fourteen worlds come walked the earth as a man.
