स्वपौरुषेकसाध्येन स्वेप्सितत्यागरूपिणा मनःप्रशममात्रेण विना नास्ति शुभा गतिः

A repetition of the preceding without the abuse, calmly and as a rule.
Three definitions of the stilling of the mind, and each cuts off a possible excuse.
Sva-pauruṣa-eka-sādhya — “achievable by one's own valour alone”. There is no one to petition and no one to cite.
Sva-īpsita-tyāga-rūpin — “having the form of giving up the desired”. That is, the stilling of the mind is no special subtle work; it is simply this.
Manaḥ-praśama-mātra — “the mere stilling of the mind”, and the word mātra, “only”, underlines: nothing more is required.
And the conclusion: without it there is no śubhā gatiḥ — “good path”.
Note the turn sva-pauruṣa, “one's own valour”. It stands beside verse 4.76, where it is said that without the teacher's mercy nothing is granted. There is no contradiction: mercy is granted to him who walks. The one without the other does not work, and the book does not choose between them.
