And so, the brāhmaṇa who constantly studies this Mahopaniṣad: the unlearned becomes learned in the Veda, the uninitiated becomes initiated; he is purified by fire, purified by wind, purified by soma, purified by truth, purified by all; he becomes known to all the gods, bathed in all the holy places, and all the gods meditate upon him; he has sacrificed with all the sacrifices. To him are credited as recited sixty thousand gāyatrīs, hundreds of thousands of itihāsas and purāṇas, ten thousand praṇavas. He purifies his line as far as sight reaches, and to the seventh generation of men. So spoke the lord Hiraṇyagarbha. And by repetition he reaches immortality. Such is the upaniṣad.

The closing promise of fruit — the phalaśruti — built on the same pattern as in the Atharvaśiras and the Kaivalya.
First the distinctions of estate and rite are annulled: aśrotriyaḥ śrotriyo bhavati, anupanīta upanīto bhavati — “the unlearned becomes learned, the uninitiated initiated”.
This deserves special note. Ordinarily the right to read the Veda is given by initiation; here the reading of the book gives what should have preceded it.
The order is inverted, and inverted on purpose. The same was said in 5.39–5.40, where beasts and foreigners are named capable of freedom: the knot is not untied by permission.
Then the five purifications: by fire, wind, soma, truth and “by all”. The first four are the hallowers of the rite; the fifth generalizes them.
Then the count: sixty thousand gāyatrīs, hundreds of thousands of itihāsas, ten thousand praṇavas. These numbers are no bookkeeping, but the customary way of saying “all that could have been earned otherwise”.
Note especially the purification of the line: ā-cakṣuṣaḥ paṅktim — “the succession as far as sight reaches”, and to the seventh generation. The fruit does not stay with one man.
And the last: the speaker is named Hiraṇyagarbha — “the golden womb”, that very golden egg from which, in this book's first adhyāya, Brahmā was born (1.7–1.9).
The circle has closed. The book began with “Nārāyaṇa alone was”, and ends with the word of him who came forth from Him.
Japyenāmṛtatvaṃ ca gacchati — “and by repetition he reaches immortality”. Not by study: by repetition.
This is the Mahopaniṣad's last word, and it means the book is to be read more than once.
