एतामहंभावमयीपपुण्यां छित्त्वानहंभाव शलाकयैव स्वभावजां भव्यभवन्तभूमौ भव प्रशान्ताखिलभूतभीतिः

अनुवाद
“Having cut this unholy one, woven of the sense of ‘I’ and born of nature itself, with the needle of not-‘I’ — abide on the ground of worthy being, with all fear of beings stilled.”

A verse hard in its language and corrupt in the copies; I render by the sense.
The tool is named elegantly: an-ahaṃ-bhāva-śalākā — “the needle of not-‘I’”.
Against the sense of “I” is set the sense of “not-I”, and set with the same needle as in 6.32.
Note the word svabhāva-jā — “born of nature itself”. Selfhood is not brought in by upbringing; it grows of itself.
This is honest, and it takes away a consolation: there is no one to blame.
The last line — praśānta-akhila-bhūta-bhītiḥ, “with all fear of beings stilled”.
It echoes 4.29, where to the stilled man all beings come with trust, as to a mother. There they did not fear him; here he does not fear them.
The one does not exist without the other.
